Vishti is one of the daughters of Surya deva, the sun god and Chhaya, the shadow-image of Saranyu, Surya’s original wife. Vishti established herself in the cycle of time in the form of a Karan. A Karan is a time span of half a Tithi or lunar date. Vishti was very fierce-looking.

Sanjna (Saranyu) was the wife of Surya. Saranyu, unable to bear Surya’s powerful rays, created a superficial shadow entity and ordered it to act as herself. The real Saranyu left Suryaloka. Chhaya, the shadow entity, acted as Surya’s wife perfectly. Surya did not realize for a long time. During this time, Chhaya had two sons and two daughters. The daughters’ names were Tapti and Vishti and the sons’ names were Savarni Manu and Shani.
